How to add a skill in Claude
Claude can create documents with built-in skills or use a custom skill uploaded as a ZIP. Claude Code has a separate installation process. Documentation review, not a runtime test. Checked against Claude’s own documentation on Oct 26, 2026.
- In Settings > Capabilities, enable Code execution and file creation (also called Create and edit files). Team and Enterprise users may need an owner to enable skills in Organization settings > Plugins & skills.
- For a custom skill you already have, package its folder with SKILL.md and supporting files as a ZIP. In Customize > Skills, choose +, Create skill, then Upload a skill.
- Enable the uploaded skill, then ask for a task that matches it. For built-in document skills, just ask Claude to create the document.
The current Claude Help Center lists Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Organization policy can restrict uploads and sharing. Chat runs code in an isolated environment; uploading a skill does not give it your local project, coding-agent tools or unrestricted network access.

What are Claude skills?
Claude skills are folders of written instructions, sometimes with templates and small programs, that teach Claude how to do one kind of job. Claude reads a short description of each skill and opens the full instructions only when your request matches.
How do I add a skill to Claude?
