Two-axis review of a code change, made with the Code Review skill. A two-axis review of a bill-splitting change.
Made with this skill: Two-axis review of a code change. Any brands, names or numbers inside are invented examples.

What Code Review makes

This skill reviews the changes since a point you choose, such as a branch, tag or earlier commit. It runs two checks in parallel: one on whether the code follows the project's written coding standards, and one on whether it does what the original issue or spec asked for. It then shows both results side by side.

We chose it as the best known code review skill with an open licence: it is MIT licensed, is from a well known author, and has a clear method. It also includes a built in list of common code smells that applies even when a project has no written standards. It expects a connected issue tracker; if there is none it asks you.

Best for: Developers who want a structured second opinion on a branch before merging.

  • Needs a starting point such as a branch or commit and checks it exists first.
  • Finds the spec from commit messages, a path you give, or docs folders.
  • Checks standards and spec in separate helpers so neither muddies the other.
  • Falls back on a fixed list of code smells if the project documents nothing.

Made with this skill

A two-axis review of a bill-splitting change. Review the tip-split branch of a tiny bill-splitting app since main. The repo's CONTRIBUTING.md holds its coding standards and docs/specs/tip-split.md holds the issue the change was meant to implement. Any brands, names or numbers inside are invented examples.

Example prompts

Type something like this once the skill is added. Your app opens the skill when the request matches.

  • Review everything I changed since main.

  • Review the last five commits against the issue that asked for them.

  • Do a code review of this branch before I open the pull request.

What’s inside

3 files in the skill folder, with its MIT licence kept inside. Only text instructions and reference files, no program files.

  • SKILL.md the instructions
  • agents/ 1 files
  • LICENSE licence

Which apps it works in

A skill is a folder of plain files, so any app that reads the open skills format can use it. Pick your app for its page.

How to add Code Review to your app

Step by step for each app. We say where to click, so you never need to leave this page.

ChatGPTby OpenAI
  1. 1 Download the skill (.zip) with the button at the top of this page, then unzip it.
  2. 2 Open the ChatGPT desktop app and look for Skills in the sidebar, where standalone skills are listed.
  3. 3 Add the “code-review” folder there if your version offers it. If you do not see Skills yet, use this skill in Claude or Codex instead.
  4. 4 In a chat, type @ and pick the skill, or just ask. Ask for what you want, for example: “Review everything I changed since main.”

To make your own, describe the workflow to @skill-creator in ChatGPT Work and it drafts a skill for you.

Questions about Code Review

Why this one?

It is MIT licensed, widely used, and explains its method. Superpowers also has code review skills, requesting-code-review and receiving-code-review.

Does it need an issue tracker?

It looks for the original issue or spec to compare against. If it cannot find one it asks you, and if you have none it skips that half and says so.

Is the Code Review skill free?

Yes. It is a Free skill on Best Agent Skills. Sign-in opens soon; when it does, a free account is all you need to download it.

Who made the Code Review skill?

Matt Pocock. We did not write it. Best Agent Skills curates skills like this one, explains them in plain words and shows how to add them to your app. It is shared under the MIT licence (Copyright (c) 2026 Matt Pocock).
