What Git Commit makes

Turns your saved changes into a tidy commit with a proper message. It looks at what you actually changed, picks the right label (new feature, bug fix, docs and so on) and writes a short, readable description.

It follows the Conventional Commits style, a common naming habit that keeps project history easy to scan. It also helps you stage the right files and warns you not to commit secrets such as password files.

Best for: Anyone who commits code and wants a history that other people can read.

  • Reads your real changes before writing the message
  • Picks a type such as feat, fix, docs or refactor
  • Adds a scope and flags breaking changes
  • Helps stage the right files and avoid secrets

Example prompts

Type something like this once the skill is added. Your app opens the skill when the request matches.

  • Commit my changes with a good message

  • Stage only the test files and commit them as one commit

  • Write a commit message for this diff that marks the breaking change

  • Split my changes into two clean commits

What’s inside

2 files in the skill folder, with its MIT licence kept inside. Only text instructions and reference files, no program files.

  • SKILL.md the instructions
  • LICENSE licence

Which apps it works in

A skill is a folder of plain files, so any app that reads the open skills format can use it. Pick your app for its page.

How to add Git Commit to your app

Step by step for each app. We say where to click, so you never need to leave this page.

ChatGPTby OpenAI
  1. 1 Download the skill (.zip) with the button at the top of this page, then unzip it.
  2. 2 Open the ChatGPT desktop app and look for Skills in the sidebar, where standalone skills are listed.
  3. 3 Add the “git-commit” folder there if your version offers it. If you do not see Skills yet, use this skill in Claude or Codex instead.
  4. 4 In a chat, type @ and pick the skill, or just ask. Ask for what you want, for example: “Commit my changes with a good message”

To make your own, describe the workflow to @skill-creator in ChatGPT Work and it drafts a skill for you.
