The same answer in a third of the words, made with the Caveman skill. The same question answered twice, without and with Caveman.
Made with this skill: The same answer in a third of the words. Any brands, names or numbers inside are invented examples.

What Caveman makes

Caveman changes how your AI talks. It answers first, drops the greetings, hedging and recaps, and keeps replies short. Code, commands, file paths, numbers and exact error messages are never changed. Articles can disappear when the sentence still reads fine, but words like not, never and only always stay.

The mode stays on for the whole session until you say "stop caveman" or "normal mode". It switches to plain full sentences for security warnings, irreversible actions, step-by-step instructions and when you seem confused. Two sibling modes go further: ultracave strips the grammar and megacave replies in classical Chinese.

Best for: People who read a lot of AI output and want it short, especially in a terminal.

  • Answer first, then the reason, then the next step
  • No greeting, hedging, pleasantries or closing offer
  • Code, paths, numbers and errors stay exact
  • Automatically switches to plain prose for warnings and risky actions
  • Turn on with /caveman, off with "stop caveman"

Made with this skill

The same question answered twice, without and with Caveman. Ask an everyday question ("My phone says storage is almost full. What should I clear first?") once in the agent's normal voice and once with the Caveman skill on. Count the words. Any brands, names or numbers inside are invented examples.

Example prompts

Type something like this once the skill is added. Your app opens the skill when the request matches.

  • /caveman

  • Caveman mode: why does my React component re-render?

  • Be brief. Explain this error in as few words as you can.

  • Stop caveman.

Which apps it works in

A skill is a folder of plain files, so any app that reads the open skills format can use it. Pick your app for its page.

How to add Caveman to your app

Step by step for each app. We say where to click, so you never need to leave this page.

ChatGPTby OpenAI

  2. 2 Open the ChatGPT desktop app and look for Skills in the sidebar, where standalone skills are listed.
  3. 3 Add the “caveman” folder there if your version offers it. If you do not see Skills yet, use this skill in Claude or Codex instead.
  4. 4 In a chat, type @ and pick the skill, or just ask. Ask for what you want, for example: “/caveman”

To make your own, describe the workflow to @skill-creator in ChatGPT Work and it drafts a skill for you.

Questions about Caveman

Does it save money?

It aims to cut output length, but the savings are modest. The README reports that on the current version one single test showed about 3 percent fewer output tokens than a plain "answer concisely" instruction, which is inside the noise.

Does it make answers less accurate?

The rules keep every technical fact and prefer clarity over compression when the two conflict. No quality-equivalence claim is published.

Does it change my code or commit messages?

No. Anything saved outside the chat, such as code, comments, commits and docs, is written in normal prose.

Is the Caveman skill free?

Yes. It is a Free skill on Best Agent Skills. Sign-in opens soon; when it does, a free account is all you need to download it.

Who made the Caveman skill?

Julius Brussee. We did not write it. Best Agent Skills curates skills like this one, explains them in plain words and shows how to add them to your app. It is shared under the Apache-2.0 licence (Copyright [yyyy] [name of copyright owner]).
