Skills vs MCP: the difference, in plain English
Skill = the method
Steps, style and checks, written once in a SKILL.md folder.
MCP = the access
A plug into your calendar, database or help desk, so the AI can read and act there.
Skills and MCP are both ways to make an AI app more useful, and they are often confused. In one line: a skill teaches the AI how to do something, and an MCP connector gives it access to something.

What skills make
All resultsThe one-line difference
A skill is a set of instructions. It tells the AI how to approach a task: the steps, the style, the checks. It lives in a folder with a SKILL.md file, and it does not connect to anything by itself.
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is a standard way to plug an AI app into outside services such as your calendar, a database, a task tracker or a file store. An MCP connector gives the AI the ability to read from, or act on, that service.
An everyday comparison
Think of a new assistant. A skill is the written procedure for how your company writes a customer reply: tone, structure, what to avoid. An MCP connector is the key to the help desk system, so the assistant can open tickets and read history.
One without the other is limited. A procedure with no access can only work on what you paste in. Access with no procedure can open every ticket and still write a poor reply.
Side by side
| Item | Skill | MCP connector |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Instructions, sometimes with scripts and templates | A link to an outside tool or data source |
| Main job | Teach a method | Give access |
| Needs a running service | No | Usually yes |
| Loads when | Your request matches its description | The AI decides to call the tool |
| Where it lives | A folder with SKILL.md | A server the app connects to |
| Typical example | Rewrite a draft so it sounds natural | Read and update tasks in a project tracker |
When to choose which
Use these rules of thumb.
- Choose a skill when you want the same method every time: a writing style, a review checklist, a report format.
- Choose a connector when the AI needs fresh data or must take an action in another app.
- Choose both when the method depends on live data, for instance a skill that defines how to write a weekly update plus a connector that reads this week's tasks.
- Neither is needed for a one-off question. Just ask.
Safety is different too
A skill can only do what the app can already do, plus run any scripts it includes, so the risk is mostly in what its instructions and scripts say. A connector can reach real accounts and data, so the risk is in what permissions you grant. Read both before you install.
On this site we cover skills. Connectors are covered by our sister site, Best Claude Apps, which lists MCP connectors for Claude and explains them in the same plain style.
A worked example
Say you run a small shop and want a weekly summary of customer feedback. Here is how the two halves split the work.
-
The skill brings the method
Group comments by theme, quote two or three, rank issues by how often they appear, end with three suggested actions. Write that once, or pick something like Customer Research, and you get the same shape every week.
-
The connector brings the data
Without one, you copy the feedback from your inbox or help desk and paste it into the chat. With one, the AI pulls this week's messages itself.
The method is identical either way, which is the point: the skill does not change when the data source does. Start with the skill. It costs nothing to try, and it works with pasted text. Add a connector later if the copying gets tedious.

Questions
Are skills and MCP competitors?
No. They solve different problems and work well together. Skills carry the method, and MCP carries the access.
Do skills use MCP?
Some skills mention or bundle connectors, and some tools let a skill ship with its own. A plain skill needs no connector.
Which is easier to set up?
Skills. In the Claude app you upload a zip. Connectors usually need an account sign-in or a running server.
Where do I find MCP connectors?
Our sister site, Best Claude Apps, covers connectors. This site covers skills.
